CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS
Students are part of the classroom environment from making the rules to designing the consequences for their actions. I expect each and every student to respect others' views and opinions at all times. A feeling of security and ability to freely communicate without fear of being rejected is a key to student achievement.
CLASSROOM POLICY
Many different learning styles are addressed in the classroom. Many of these include the use of Technology and Multimedia resources including computer, DVD, and even individual remote control use for classroom assessments resulting in immediate beneficial feedback for the student and teacher. Students are expected to complete any homework given due to its extreme importance in the next day's lesson. If a student is having trouble completing their homework I am available several times every day to help. Homework that is late is accepted up to two days late, then it becomes a 0. If a child is absent they will have additional time to complete the assignments but it is their responsibility to get the missed work from me. Communication is key to student success. If parents or students ever have any concerns or questions, please contact me immediately.
LESSON MODELS
The lesson format that is used in class is the 5-E model. 5-E stands for ENGAGE, EXPLORE, EXPLAIN, EVALUATE, ELABORATE. The model is designed to create a highly engaging and interactive atmosphere where my job is to create a learning environment and then facilitate the learning. This district was chosen to participate in a 4 year project where the Binghamton City School District science program and Binghamton University have come together to enhance student learning. This 1.2 million dollar NSF grant’s main objective was to enhance and link the science program in grades 3-6. Benefits of this program include graduate students who have worked directly with teachers and students in and out of the classroom and workshops to bring teachers from all levels together in what has been a successful effort to generate units that build off each other as the student progresses. The atmosphere is charged and the results will continue to be great.
